What is learned through SEL Art Lessons?

Lessons are designed to be culturally inclusive, trauma invested, and geared to meeting each child where they are at.

Stress, Anxiety and the Brain

Through these engaging activities, kids learn how to handle anxiety and stress more effectively by understanding the importance of self-expression and communication. SEL art lessons help children develop important social emotional learning (SEL) skills that will help them throughout life!

Diversity and Acceptance

Exploring different perspectives: Art can be a powerful tool for helping students understand and appreciate different perspectives. By creating and examining art that reflects diverse cultures and experiences, students can learn to see the world through others’ eyes and develop empathy and respect for different ways of life.

Identifying Emotions

With the guidance of Mrs. Perry who provides meaningful feedback and encouragement during the projects, children learn to better understand how they feel and how to effectively communicate those feelings with others.

Grief and Loss

SEL art lessons can teach about grief and loss by encouraging emotional expression, exploring different perspectives, promoting self-reflection, and facilitating support and connection. By developing these skills and habits, students can learn to cope with grief and loss in healthy and constructive ways.

Self Care

SEL art lessons can teach self-care by encouraging mindfulness, emotional expression, self-esteem, creativity, and other practices that promote well-being. By developing these skills and habits, students can learn to take care of themselves and cultivate a sense of balance and resilience in their lives.

Proof that Art Heals

In 2018 shortly after Christmas break a 9 year old student was enrolled in a new school. The students teacher immediately noticed that the student was withdrawn, distant, and depressed. This behavior was a result of a tragic car accident that claimed both of the students parents.

The student was placed in a special session where each morning they would draw. After a few short weeks of silence the student began to open up. This single connection allowed the student to share their emotions and start the healing process.

Connecting art and emotions helped the student get back their smile and was once again academically successful in the classroom.

Art heals. Art saves.
